ACE Archæology Club executed a complete survey of Winkleigh Airfield in 1999 as a Millenium project. The objective was to record what remains were currently visible and to document as much detail and information that we could. In addition to many photographs, a full survey was later made of the Water Works that did not appear in any surviving documentation.
Since its first publication, there have significant changes on Winkleigh Airfield. The full Survey Report has been much expanded and revised, comprising 104 pages of maps, plans, history, survey details and over 150 photographs. In addition, ACE has included the detailed survey of the Water Works for the airfield; much of which has since been destroyed.
The Report is now available on CD in PDF format. Copies of the CD are only £5 plus 75p post and packing, and are available from ACE, Wishpool, Deans Lane, South Molton, EX36 3DS. Please make cheques payable to ACE Archaeology Club.

A large earthwork on a promontory overlooking a steep sided valley. The earthworks have variously been described as a prehistoric enclosure, a ring work or a medieval fortified manor house. ACE Archæology Club has completed a full plane-table survey of the site, which found at least one previously unrecorded feature. The survey is now being interpreted and will hopefully clarify previous speculations.
An excavation into some of the remains of Seckington House, which were moved to make way for modern workshops. The earliest record of the site that we have found is 1539, but the finds indicate a far longer period of habitation. The pottery has been looked at by John Allen at the RAM Museum in Exeter; we have a very large collection of medieval pottery (from early to late), a small amount of post-medieval to 20th century and last but no means least, one sherd of 10th century Saxo-Norman, very rare in North Devon apparently. The full report has been delayed, but hopefully will be completed soon.
An ACE Archæology Club field walk of a large flint scatter which recovered over 4000 pieces covering a wide time frame. A grant from the CBA made a geo-physical survey possible, with indications of possible hearth sites. A full report will be published here when it is complete.
