House Scouts is a community heritage project funded by the Local Heritage Initiative and was instigated by the Winkleigh Society (a Civic Trust) and ACE Archaeology Club. House Scouts is a DIY project, inspired by the BBC’s House Detectives and is for residents who are interested in discovering the history of where they live. The project is also part of North Devon On Disc and has created a large physical and digital archive, some of which can be seen on Explore North Devon at www.explorenorthdevon.org. The full archive can be viewed at the Winkleigh Community Centre on Wednesday mornings at the Mini Market.
In the census listings it is difficult to identify particular houses. The street names, if any, changed frequently as did the house names, which were normally the name of the current leaseholder, if a name was given at all. Detailed examination of the census listings has identified the location and extent of the street names, and a description of these can be found in the Stories section of Explore North Devon
. The examination also identified the location of many houses by their inhabitants. The full census listings are now identifying yet more houses which are noted within our transcripts available to download from our CENSUS Page.
