WINKLEIGH CENSUS TRANSCRIPTS
These Transcripts are part of the House Scouts project, and the task was undertaken to identify the changing street names and, consequently, the location of individual houses in the census returns. Where houses have been identified, it has been noted in the transcripts. It has also been possible to trace families and inter-marriages through the transcripts and, to some degree, identify who was living where. Hopefully, this will be of benefit to those interested in genealogy. The changing street names can be viewed on Explore North Devon, under Stories, and will be available here later.
The transcripts are in database dBase4 (.dbf) file format, which it should be possible to import into most database programs. On 5 JUNE 2010 all these files have been re-written to be in the census order and to be more readable. If you do not have a program to view dBase4 files, then Open Ofice may be downloaded for free from www.OpenOffice.org. Thus, the transcripts are fully searchable. The transcripts are in the original Schedule number order, however, one or two records may be out of order in the dBase4 file. Thus, the file should be re-ordered on the Schedule number before use. The transcripts are complete with emunerator’s margin notes and noted corrections to enumerator and other errors. These Notes are referenced in the Disabilities column of the transcript in the appropriate record. The errors have been verified by cross referencing other census returns and other documents such as birth, marriage and death indexes. Thus, these transcripts are believed to have corrected all the errors in many other transcripts offered by other web sites. Please refer to the Notes and Conventions for each year for full details.
The transcripts also include house identification numbers where the locations have been verified. The numbers are those used by House Scouts, and are based on the Tithe Apportionment numbers. Where an apportionment number covers more than one house, or when a house has been divided, the number is suffixed by a letter for each house. The identification of houses is an ongoing task and the listings will be updated from time to time, as noted against each download item. A map of the village showing the house numbers is also available for downloading below.
Should you find any errors in the transcriptions, please e-mail us at tr@ACEarch.org.uk
In addition, There is a transcript of the Winkleigh Tithe apportionments dated 12 May 1846. Because of the date, the apportionments have perhaps a greater corellation to the 1851 census rather than that of 1841. The file is in .xls (Excel) format but may be opened with Open Office which may be downloaded for free from www.OpenOffice.org. DOWNLOAD TITHE xls file file size 633k.
